What is Bluetooth LE Audio?
Bluetooth LE Audio represents a new generation in Bluetooth audio technology, leveraging the Bluetooth Low Energy radio standard to provide improved performance without compromising battery life. At its core is a new codec that significantly boosts audio quality, ensuring that users experience clearer and richer sound during game chats and calls.
The Shift from Bluetooth Classic
Traditionally, Bluetooth Classic has been the backbone for connecting wireless audio devices. However, it is limited to an 8kHz sample rate with profiles like the Advanced Audio Distribution Profile (A2DP) and Hands-Free Profile (HFP), which often results in muffled audio. In contrast, Bluetooth LE Audio upgrades this to a 32kHz sample rate, enhancing sound clarity and providing what Microsoft describes as a “super wideband” audio experience.

To access these enhancements, users will need Bluetooth headsets that support LE Audio. Additionally, a Windows 11 PC with the latest drivers and updates (specifically, the Windows 11 24H2 update) is required. Microsoft anticipates wider availability of LE Audio out-of-the-box for new mobile PCs launching from late 2025 onwards.
