How U.S.-China Tariff Disputes Are Impacting the Electronics Industry
With a 90-day deferral ending on July 9, electronics suppliers like MSI and Gigabyte are scrambling to meet the surging demand for graphics cards in the U.S. The looming tariff changes have created a sense of urgency, with companies stockpiling inventory ahead of expected price hikes.
Demand Surge Amid Tariff Uncertainty
The electronics supply chain is feeling the heat as U.S.-China tariff discussions reach a critical juncture. As noted by Nikkei Asian Review, representatives from MSI and Gigabyte highlighted the increased demand driven by fears of upcoming tariff increases. 
MSI’s Chairman, Joseph Hsu, explained the challenge of accumulating stock in the U.S., especially as new graphics solutions were released only in April and are swiftly purchased upon arrival.
Strategic Adjustments to Production
Tariff uncertainties are prompting Taiwanese manufacturers to adapt their operations. MSI plans to expand production outside China by 2027, including a new cluster in northern Taiwan and a server system assembly site in California. Additionally, facilities in Vietnam and Thailand will enhance their capacity to meet demand.
Tensions and Industry Concerns
If the parties fail to reach a compromise, tariffs on Chinese goods could soar to 145% on July 9, with reciprocal U.S. tariffs at 125%. Although video card tariffs have a grace period until the end of August, the overall atmosphere is tense.
Future Prospects and Risks
Gigabyte also reported record revenues from its U.S. operations in May, yet the ongoing tariff situation remains a major concern. As noted by Gigabyte leaders, the strengthening Taiwanese dollar poses additional challenges for exporters. Both MSI and Gigabyte are looking to dodge potential pitfalls by diversifying their manufacturing bases.
