Surge in Fixed Internet Demand Amid Mobile Disconnects: A Growing Trend
With recent mobile internet interruptions following drone attacks, many individuals and businesses are turning to fixed-line internet solutions. This shift highlights an increased demand for stable internet connections, especially during the summer cottage season, reports Forbes.
Significant Uptick in Fixed-Line Internet Applications
From May 19 to May 25, 2025, “Rostelecom” experienced a 20% rise in requests for fixed internet connections compared to April. A similar trend is seen across various regions. One telecom operator in the Odintsovo district confirmed a seasonal increase in applications. This surge followed temporary mobile internet outages in Moscow on May 7 and May 9, affecting services like taxis and online retail.
Impacts Felt Across Multiple Regions
Further mobile internet disruptions occurred on May 21 in areas like Lipetsk, Tula, and Vladimir, with additional issues reported in Moscow. “Beeline” and “MegaFon” confirmed these challenges. On May 22, mobile internet failure extended to Oryol, Vladimir, and Ivanovo regions as protective measures were enforced.
Business and Rural Demand for Reliable Internet
A statement from “Rostelecom” noted a 41% week-on-week increase in business internet applications. Experts suggest that, with the approaching summer and segment demand, people increasingly work remotely, making reliable internet crucial. Mobile network disruptions impact businesses that depend on mobile connectivity, such as cash registers and POS terminals, compelling them to seek broadband solutions.
Opportunities for Fixed-Line Providers
This situation presents opportunities for fixed-line operators. Companies quick to address the influx of requests and efficiently connect customers will stand to benefit. Large nationwide providers might find it easier to capitalize on this trend, while smaller local players may need to amplify their efforts to remain competitive.
