Meta Faces EU Antitrust Heat Over AI Chatbot’s WhatsApp Integration

In what seems to be yet another dramatic entry into the ring of tech giants vs. regulatory bodies, Meta finds itself under the magnifying glass of the Italian Competition Authority (AGCM). The issue at hand? The pre-integration of the AI chatbot into WhatsApp. The Italians aren’t warming up to this sudden company, calling foul on the grounds of antitrust regulations.

Here’s the lowdown

In 2024, Meta took the bold step to slide its AI chatting sidekick into WhatsApp, a move designed ostensibly to hand users a handy AI buddy right within their favorite messaging app. But the rollout didn’t come without its array of raised eyebrows. By March 2025, the Italian authorities were on the case, scrutinizing if such maneuvers violated the cozy balance of EU’s antitrust laws.

AGCM, coupled with their friends in the European Commission, has launched a full-blown investigation. Their suspect: Meta’s possible abuse of its dominant position in the social media and messaging market – a possible breach of Article 102 of the Treaty on the Functioning of the European Union.

The accusation? Meta didn’t exactly ask for a kind RSVP from its legion of users when it decided to roll out this integration. The AI chatbot now rests prominently within WhatsApp, a fact not lost on AGCM, who assert users are subtly nudged to interact with this new feature.

On the flip side, Meta is sticking to its guns, saying the integration of the chatbot makes interacting with AI as easy as chatting with Aunt Mildred in a familiar environment. They argue it provides a seamless experience for millions of Italian users. The cloak of ‘public benefit’ hangs heavy here, with Meta seemingly indicating it’s all in the name of better service.

Nonetheless, Italian authorities aren’t convinced. Their primary concern remains whether Meta’s actions shut out alternative AI competitors, effectively reshaping user experience dynamics without due choice or consent.

As this investigation continues to unfurl, it symbolizes yet another tech blockbuster moment where regulatory wisdom and Silicon Valley ambitions theatrically clash. Will this lead to hefty penalties or even a realignment of how tech titans roll out new features? We’ll all have to stay tuned.
