On July 30, affected employees logged in to watch a message from CEO Mike Cannon-Brookes. The video reportedly didn’t include the specifics of whose axe would fall, just that it would. Employees were told to wait 15 minutes for an email with more information. Until then, suspense. But no surprise: those on the chopping block quickly found their workflows brutally interrupted as their company laptops went dark.

The video was humorlessly dubbed “Restructuring the CSS Team: A Difficult Decision for Our Future,” and hurriedly ushered the workers into joblessness. Among those terminated were many from the customer support and services team, who are set to be replaced by growing AI capabilities.

This restructuring move is Atlassian’s recent attempt to trim its sails as the tech industry increasingly steers its ships with AI at the helm. This is not just a reflection of how technology is rapidly reshaping jobs but also a glimpse into how employee/employer communications might look in the coming years. Yet, this effort wasn’t all about the immediacy of termination notices. A safety net was at least provided, offering those laid off a severance package of six months’ salary.

Still, the irony isn’t lost on those seeing AI as transformational. Atlassian’s decision can’t be ignored in the context of growing discussions around AI’s ability to automate jobs and disrupt established work patterns. Where some see technological advancement, others worry about job security.

While the jury’s out on whether this is the employment model moving forward, the callousness of a pre-packaged layoff message might illuminate broader implications. It’s undeniable that AI is strengthening its foothold, but whether this method of communication was wise or just tone-deaf is another story.
