Xiaomi’s Smart Lock Challenges Conventional Security with DIY Charm

Xiaomi has released the Self-Install Smart Lock – an intelligent lock that requires no door mortising. Compatible with eight types of mechanisms, including Euro profile, UK mortise, and ASSA 2000, it supports keys up to 5 mm thick.

The device features a fingerprint scanner, allows for permanent and temporary passwords, supports Bluetooth unlocking, remote access via Xiaomi Home app, voice control, and traditional key use. Voice commands work through Alexa, Google Assistant, and Apple Home, though additional authentication is required for some platforms. Fingerprint scanning and password can be combined for extra security.

Thanks to Wi-Fi and Bluetooth, users can track the lock’s status in real-time, receive notifications about family member entries, security events, and door status. It has auto-lock functionality, unclosed door reminders, break-in alerts, and notifications of multiple failed entry attempts.

The Self-Install Smart Lock supports Matter for compatibility with different smart home platforms and runs on the MJA1 chip. It’s certified by the European EN18031 standard, powered by a 2450 mAh lithium battery, providing approximately six months of average usage life. The lock is already on sale in Japan for $82 and in the UAE for $98. Support pages exist for the UK and several EU countries, indicating an imminent European release.

Amidst a growing trend in smart home technology, Xiaomi continues to expand its market footprint, targeting early adopters in regions beyond East Asia. This strategic move aligns with increased consumer interest in DIY smart home upgrades. Industry experts note Xiaomi’s rapid integration of emerging tech standards like Matter, a sign of their commitment to innovation and cross-platform accessibility.

In a field crowded with competitors, Xiaomi’s offering stands out with its advanced features and seamless integration with existing ecosystems. As homes grow smarter, Xiaomi appears to be doubling down on its strategy of user-friendly products, promising both convenience and enhanced security for consumers worldwide.
