Xiaomi has announced the completion of a new sports and health laboratory, spanning over 5,000 square meters. This facility will focus on research to enhance devices related to health tracking. It represents a significant research and development center aimed at improving the accuracy and reliability of the company’s wearable devices, such as smartwatches and activity trackers.
The laboratory is designed to evaluate how algorithms responsible for fitness and health operate under conditions closely mirroring real-life usage. Inside the complex, there are 23 zones for testing various metrics and more than 40 types of sports equipment. The testing process utilizes 29 unspecified ‘gold standards,’ commonly used in medical and scientific research; however, Xiaomi has not disclosed further details.
Judging by the information, it appears the center was completed some time ago and has been operational for a while, as the company claims its wearable devices have already increased the accuracy of calorie counting by 17% due to the tests conducted. The accuracy of oxygen consumption assessment has improved by 15%. Furthermore, according to the company, its devices can determine sleep and wake times with 11% more accuracy, and the recognition of deep and light sleep stages has improved by 14%.
Recently, Xiaomi has been focusing on integrating more advanced sensors in their wearables to provide comprehensive health insights. The move towards non-invasive glucose monitoring and multi-lead electrocardiograms is noteworthy, making Xiaomi competitive in an industry that is rapidly advancing with new health monitoring technologies.
Moreover, by leveraging advancements in AI and machine learning, the wearables are set to offer real-time feedback. This progression is expected not only to contribute to personal health improvements but also to sports performance by accurately tracking different sports and fitness regimes, potentially revolutionizing how individuals understand their personal health metrics and athletic performance.
