Xiaomi has made a strategic decision to release the highly anticipated Xiaomi 17 Ultra ahead of its usual schedule. According to Xiaomi Group President, Lu Weibing, this move responds directly to fan requests for a launch before the Chinese New Year, allowing users to capture the festive season with the flagship camera capabilities. The official launch is set for next week, aiming to capitalize on holiday sentiments.
The Xiaomi 17 Ultra’s standout feature remains its photography prowess. This time, a deeper collaboration with Leica has evolved into a ‘strategic co-creation’ model, indicating a full partnership from the design phase. This alliance has birthed a new 1-inch main sensor and an innovative APO telephoto lens, promising dramatic improvements in both night photography and zoom functionality.
Despite announcing an accelerated release, Xiaomi also cautioned about an increase in pricing. Where the previous model debuted at 6,500 CNY ($920), the new model will see this number rise. Lu Weibing reiterated a statement made during the last launch, labeling it the ‘last’ at the old price point – a prediction that has indeed materialized. He cites the sharp rise in memory chip costs as a primary factor. Industry experts forecast further challenges from 2025 to 2027, with persistent inflation in component pricing. Xiaomi aims to uphold a pricing strategy that fairly reflects component price hikes without alienating their consumer base.
