Xiaomi SU7: Defying Battery Degradation Norms Amidst EV Revolution

One of the early owners of the Xiaomi SU7 reported that his vehicle retained 94.5% battery capacity after covering a distance of 165,000 miles (265,000 kilometers) over 18 months of operation. “The Xiaomi staff shared the results with me, and I was genuinely shocked,” said Mr. Feng, the car’s owner. “I expected the battery level to drop to at most 90%. Seeing 94.5% was truly unexpected.”

This data was taken from a Xiaomi SU7 Pro rear-wheel drive model, which the owner used to drive an average of 373 miles (600 kilometers) daily. The car’s 94.3 kWh battery has theoretically completed around 506 full charge-discharge cycles, based on an estimated energy consumption of 29 kWh per 100 miles (18 kWh per 100 kilometers). In reality, the actual number of partial charging cycles is likely much higher, as most electric vehicle owners follow the charging recommendation of 20-80%, rather than fully discharging the battery before recharging.

Most electric vehicle manufacturers offer an 8-year or 93,206 miles (150,000 kilometers) warranty on their batteries, with acceptable degradation thresholds of 20-30%. Even Tesla, known for its leadership in battery technology, offers an 8-year or 99,419 miles (160,000 kilometers) warranty on their rear-wheel-drive Model 3 and Y versions, with a minimum capacity retention requirement of 70%.

Companies like CATL and Panasonic are developing new materials and chemistries that promise extended range, quicker charging times, and enhanced durability. This progress directly supports the performance seen in the Xiaomi SU7.
