The company Xiaomi has increased the prices of its products. According to Gizmochina, this currently applies to tablets and apparently only in the Chinese market. The price increase is between $15-$30 depending on the model. For high-end tablets, this is insignificant, but for budget ones, it is already noticeable. Especially when you consider that Xiaomi products are cheaper in China than in other countries.
The increase affected the Pad 8 line, as well as all configurations of the Redmi Pad 2. The basic version of the Xiaomi Pad 8 now costs from 2299 yuan ($358) instead of 2199 yuan ($342), and the starting price of the Pad 8 Pro has risen from 2799 yuan ($436) to 2899 yuan ($452). Budget Redmi Pad 2 has increased by 200 yuan ($31), regardless of the model, which for the base version amounted to about a 20% markup.
Xiaomi’s Pad 8 series, comparable to the iPad and Samsung’s Galaxy Tab, offers similar sizes and multi-tasking capabilities but at a lower price point. The Redmi Pad 2, with its attractive display and solid battery life, appeals to budget-conscious consumers, though this new price increase might affect its appeal against rivals.
“As these devices become more feature-rich, price plays a crucial role,” comments an industry expert. “The balance Xiaomi strikes with cost versus features is key to its competitiveness.”
Historically, unexpected price hikes for budget tech products can lead to hesitancy among potential buyers. Chinese consumers, particularly price-sensitive segments, may hesitate with Xiaomi’s decision, scrutinizing value even more than before.
