A modder known by the nickname High Tech \ Low Life has crafted a cyberdeck that transforms a regular smartphone into a compact universal workstation. A cyberdeck is a homemade, portable, customized computer in a cyberpunk style. This bespoke case is designed specifically for phones and adds elements commonly lacking in phones: real speakers, a physical keyboard, additional ports, and enhanced ergonomics. The developer noted, “The laptop I need isn’t made… so I made my own. Creating this Cyberdeck took a lot of time, but it packs in many features.”
The design is inspired by the Atari Portfolio, an early handheld computer that appeared in the movie “Terminator 2.” It opens to 180 degrees, creating the feel of a small laptop. Old ThinkPad hinges were used for increased durability, and special mounts modeled in Fusion 360 secure the phone in place with magnets.
One of the main features is sound. The Cyberdeck is equipped with two stereo speakers, each 5 watts in power, connected to a Bluetooth amplifier. According to the manufacturer, the volume and clarity of the sound far exceed the phone’s capabilities. Data input is accomplished via a compact keyboard with an integrated trackpad, which allows complete navigation without touching the phone’s screen. Power is supplied by a 10,000 mAh battery, and a built-in USB-C hub expands accessory connectivity options.
The cyberpunk aesthetic has long influenced creators in the tech community, inspiring designs that combine functionality with a retro-futuristic look. From hackerspaces in urban hubs to dedicated online forums, enthusiasts pursue projects like the cyberdeck to embody the ethos of a future envisioned in classic cyberpunk literature and film.
Advancements in smartphone accessories have gradually transformed phones into desktop-like workstations. Gadget enthusiasts now have myriad options to enhance their mobile devices with keyboards, docks, and advanced hubs. However, projects like High Tech \ Low Life’s Cyberdeck stand out by merging these functionalities with a stylized design that speaks to both utility and personal expression. This trend not only highlights innovation but also a growing interest in personalized technology.
