On December 9, at a Florida middle school, an AI weapon detection system mistakenly initiated a lockdown after confusing a clarinet with a gun. Lawton Chiles Middle School in Oviedo declared a ‘red code’. It’s unclear why the AI confused the musical instrument with a weapon. Interestingly, the school principal essentially blamed the student for holding the instrument as if it were a firearm.
Dear parents, students, and staff of Chiles Middle School, I would like to remind you of the reasons for the brief ‘Red Code’ announcement on our campus. As you know, we have a multi-layered security system, including an automated potential threat detection system. One student was walking through the corridor, holding a musical instrument as if it were a weapon, which triggered the ‘Red Code’. Although there was no threat to the campus, I would ask you to talk to your child about the dangers associated with imitating having a weapon on school grounds. We are grateful for the prompt response of our law enforcement partners, as well as our students and staff for following safety protocols. Perhaps the child did indeed carry the clarinet in such a manner, but these are issues not with the children, but with security systems.
