Unexpected Apple Generosity Spawns Surprise in Latest MacBook Exchange

A Reddit user named otto-mate shared a fascinating story of a visit to an Apple Store for the repair of an old laptop. Ultimately, he received a top-of-the-line 16-inch MacBook Pro with the M4 Max chip, valued at $4300, entirely free of charge. Photo: otto-mate

After receiving a system notification about the need to replace the battery in his 2018 15-inch MacBook Pro, otto-mate initially approached a third-party service where the repair was estimated at $270. Finding the amount too high, he decided to turn to an official Apple Store.

In Apple’s official service, the battery replacement was appraised at just $60. The staff conducted diagnostics, ordered the necessary parts, and warned that the repair would take about a week. However, two weeks later, he received unwelcome news: the laptop stopped working during the repair. The service center engineers attempted to restore the device using two new sets of parts but were unsuccessful-the MacBook Pro could not be restarted.

Since the customer was left without a computer, Apple offered compensation-a device with the closest possible specifications. According to the owner himself, he expected to receive something like a refurbished MacBook with an Apple SoC. Indeed, he received a MacBook with an Apple SoC, and this laptop turned out to be a 16-inch MacBook Pro with M4 Max for $4353. Judging by the price, we’re talking about the top version with a 16-core CPU, 48 GB of unified memory, and a 2 TB SSD.

In Reddit comments, user Bsul92 suggested that Apple employees might have inadvertently damaged the laptop during the repair, and issuing a new MacBook Pro became a form of compensation. Similar cases have occurred before: it is known that Apple has replaced Intel versions of MacBook Pros with Apple SoC models in cases where repairs were impossible. However, replacing a laptop with the most up-to-date, yet top-end version-a gesture incredibly generous.
