Turkey has commenced constructing a spaceport in Somalia, having completed preliminary research and design phases. This announcement came from Mehmet Fatih Kacır, Turkey’s Minister of Industry and Technology. The project marks a significant step in Turkey’s quest to secure independent access to space and enhance its role in the global space economy.
Implemented under a cooperation agreement between the two nations, Somalia has allocated land to Turkey for this initiative. According to Kacır, extensive studies have identified Somalia as the most suitable location. Proximity to the equator offers technical advantages for space launches, making Somalia particularly attractive for spaceport investment. The project is coordinated by the Ministry of Industry and Technology, with active involvement from the Turkish Space Agency and other relevant institutions.
Kacır describes the spaceport as a strategic investment that positions Turkey to become an independent and competitive player in global space activities. The initiative is expected to yield long-term economic benefits, particularly by ensuring fully independent launches of domestically developed satellites. Turkey plans to launch its communications satellites Turksat 6A and IMECE into space, and is also developing a launch vehicle. This development positions Turkey not only as a satellite operator but also advances its capabilities in launching and potentially offering launch services on the global commercial space market.
The geographical proximity of Somalia to the equator, its coastal geography, favorable year-round weather conditions, and relatively low air and sea traffic contribute to the security and efficiency of launches. These advantages support flexible launch schedules, decreasing the risk of delays that often plague launches in less optimal locations. Turkey’s space ambitions extend beyond satellite communication, as it focuses on developing technologies and capabilities that can bolster its strategic presence in space.
