At the GAC Toyota plant, the first Toyota Platinum 4X level L4 robotaxi officially rolled off the assembly line, created jointly with Pony.ai. This release signifies a shift from testing technology to large-scale mass production of autonomous vehicles and opens a new chapter in the companies’ strategic cooperation in the robotaxi field. Pony.ai plans to deploy 1,000 of these vehicles in major cities in 2026, providing safe and round-the-clock trips. The Platinum 4X is equipped with Pony.ai’s seventh-generation autonomous driving system, tested in the challenging conditions of Beijing, Shanghai, Guangzhou, and Shenzhen, and optimized for various usage scenarios.
The system ensures a high level of safety thanks to a multi-layered backup architecture, reduces equipment costs by 70% compared to the previous generation, and provides compatibility with various car models. For passengers, Bluetooth unlocking, voice control, and access to online services are implemented.
Recent advances have seen GAC Toyota and Pony.ai announcing plans to further enhance their collaboration by producing 1,000 robotaxis by 2026. This move aims to provide a reliable fleet for urban transportation, beginning in major Chinese cities. Enhanced with cutting-edge sensors and AI technology, their latest robotaxi design is adapted to handle the complexities of urban environments efficiently.
