Tiny Marvel: PC Magic Inside an Xbox Shell

Home gaming consoles are usually more compact than the average gaming PC, and some users enjoy creating equally compact builds. The creator from the PhasedTech channel decided to simplify things and assembled a PC inside a console case, choosing the compact Xbox One S.

This model measures 295 x 230 x 65 mm, with a case volume of about 4.4 liters. Gaming PCs on the market exist in even more compact cases with greater performance potential. However, such builds usually contain specialized components. In this project, the builder used components readily available on the market. He built the system using a Mini-ITX motherboard, a Ryzen 5 3600 processor, a low-profile Noctua NH-L9i cooler, a small 250W power supply, low-profile RAM modules, and a single-slot GeForce RTX 3050 graphics card.

Remarkably, the optical drive was preserved during the assembly. Of course, this build doesn’t impress with its performance, but the Xbox One S is much weaker for gaming.

Market Availability and Component Pricing

The components used in this PC build remain accessible in the market. The Ryzen 5 3600 and RTX 3050, although popular, have seen moderate availability fluctuation due to ongoing demand. Current average pricing for the Ryzen 5 3600 is around $199, the RTX 3050 hovers near $299, while the Noctua NH-L9i cooler is approximately $49. The Mini-ITX motherboard costs about $150, a 250W PSU at $40, and low-profile RAM varies but generally costs around $60 for 16GB.

Performance Comparison and Gaming Impact

Custom-built PCs using the Ryzen 5 3600 with RTX 3050 typically offer superior gaming performance compared to the Xbox One S. Benchmarks show significant improvements in frame rates, resolutions, and overall gaming experience. Though not matching the latest high-end PCs, this configuration supports modern games at respectable settings, ensuring enjoyable gameplay and smoother graphics performance.

Trends in Compact Gaming Builds

The latest trends in compact gaming PC builds include innovative uses of space and cooling solutions, such as integrating custom liquid cooling systems or using sleek, small form factor cases designed specifically for high performance. Compared to these, the Xbox One S PC build is a testament to creative DIY, merging aesthetic appeal with functional hardware integration.

Expert Opinions on Creative Builds

Experts and enthusiasts in the gaming community appreciate creative PC builds, like integrating PCs into console shells, for their ingenuity and customization potential. These projects often serve as showcases of technical skill and innovation, offering inspirational ideas for the community. Experts emphasize the importance of balancing creativity with functionality, ensuring that unique builds maintain usability and reliability.
