The Shift from Windows: Apple Booms While Linux Gains New Fans

The conclusion of Windows 10 support, as we have previously discussed, has sparked a surge in Apple laptop sales. Furthermore, it has now come to light that there has been a significant uptick in Linux distribution downloads.

At least the developers of Zorin OS have reported an unprecedented number of downloads.

The developers of this system (which is based on Linux) report that their latest release, Zorin OS 18, has already been downloaded over a million times. Importantly, according to telemetry data, more than 78% of these downloads came from Windows systems.

Zorin OS is positioned for everyday users who do not want to delve into the numerous nuances of Linux. Here, even the interface resembles Windows 11 with additions of macOS. In addition, the Progressive Web App installer allows users to install services such as Office 365, Teams, Google Docs, and even Photoshop Web as if they were native applications. All of this greatly simplifies the adaptation to the new system for people not particularly familiar with PCs.

Linux’s Rising Star

Recent trends indicate that the cessation of Windows 10 support might further elevate the adoption of Linux distributions like Zorin OS and Apple’s macOS. As more users seek stable, long-term operating systems, Linux distributions offer a compelling alternative due to their open-source nature and cost-effectiveness.

The Apple Effect

The end of Windows 10 support has also reportedly led to an increase in macOS users, as the intuitive interface and seamless integration with Apple’s ecosystem attract former Windows users. Coupled with Apple’s latest technology upgrades, including the new M1 and M2 chips that boast superior performance and energy efficiency, Mac devices represent a preferable choice for many looking to switch from Windows.

User Testimonials and Expert Insights

Feedback from early adopters of Zorin OS 18 highlights its user-friendly interface and comprehensive support for applications typically used on Windows, making the transition less daunting. Experts note that the ability to integrate familiar applications like Office 365 natively into the desktop environment plays a crucial role in its growing popularity.

As users increasingly pivot from Windows, the technological landscape for operating systems continues to evolve, with Apple’s macOS and various Linux distributions carving out larger portions of the market share.
