The Cloud Revolution: Why PCs May Soon Be Relics

Cloud services are rapidly developing across all sectors, and this trend is unlikely to cease. In this context, the statement by Amazon’s founder about the future possibly existing without personal full-fledged computers sounds very telling. Jeff Bezos believes that personal computer equipment is outdated as a phenomenon. According to him, the future will be tied to cloud computing, meaning users will simply rent computing resources. In this scenario, instead of a PC, users will have the simplest terminal with a screen and network access.

In fact, this is already being actively developed in part. Music and movies have moved online, and many work services also rely on remote data processing. Cloud gaming services are not as successful, but Nvidia has long and firmly established itself in the market, and Xbox Game Pass Cloud even allows playing via subscription without buying the games themselves.

To make Bezos’s idea a reality, operating systems need to be cloud-based, and then a powerful PC would indeed lose its significance. Microsoft has worked on a consumer cloud version of Windows based on its corporate cloud PC product, Windows 365. However, the company is not rushing and is currently focusing all efforts on AI.

Amazon Web Services (AWS) has recently announced several new advancements in machine learning and AI-driven cloud solutions, aiming to streamline operations for businesses worldwide. This aligns with Bezos’s vision of a cloud-dependent future, underscoring Amazon’s position as a leader in the field.

Nvidia continues to expand its GeForce NOW service, reinforcing the viability of cloud gaming, while Microsoft’s recent unveiling of a seamless cloud PC experience hints at future transformations in everyday computing habits.

Possibly, Bezos’s reflections could be simply considered his personal thoughts. However, it is worth remembering that Amazon is one of the largest companies in the world, and Amazon Web Services is the largest cloud services operator.
