Starlink is rapidly expanding its presence in the sky: the satellite internet service for passengers has been adopted by 34 airlines worldwide, with 21 signing agreements in just the last three months. Among the new participants are Air Dolomiti, Austrian Airlines, Brussels Airlines, Discover Airlines, Edelweiss Air, Eurowings, Gulf Air, ITA Airways, Lufthansa, and SWISS. Previously, major carriers such as Air France, British Airways, Emirates, Korean Air, Virgin Atlantic, and United Airlines joined the system. The full list is available here.
The service enables passengers to stay online during flights, providing high-speed data transmission and stable connectivity on long-haul routes. It was recently reported that more than 2,500 aircraft are equipped with Starlink internet, including private, business jets, and commercial airliners.
The adoption of Starlink by airlines signifies a game-changer in in-flight connectivity, offering speeds akin to ground-based broadband. The service’s promise of uninterrupted coverage even in remote areas is a key selling point. Competition with traditional providers such as Gogo and Panasonic Avionics is intensifying, spurring advancements across the industry.
Starlink’s low earth orbit satellites are at the heart of this innovation, reducing latency and enhancing bandwidth. This technology is crucial for meeting the growing demands of passengers who expect seamless streaming and connectivity.
With technological advancements accelerating, the aviation industry anticipates even broader implementation. Starlink is poised to integrate with cutting-edge aircraft systems, promising a future where staying connected in the skies becomes the norm rather than an exception.
