Starbase Gears Up for Growth Amid Security Enhancements

The Starbase spaceport and city plan to establish a police department, as recommended by city administrator Kent Myers. “There are many security risks associated with operations here,” Myers said. “And we are also isolated from other cities.” For over a decade, SpaceX has been acquiring land near Boca Chica for rocket construction and launches. Hundreds of SpaceX employees have moved there, dubbing the area “Starbase.” In May, they voted to make Starbase a city. As of fall 2025, Starbase was home to about 580 residents, including around 320 SpaceX employees and nearly 130 children. With the company building a new rocket factory and launch infrastructure, the population could reach 1,000 by summer 2026.

SpaceX’s evolving urban landscape.

“We are growing,” Myers stated. “And I think with this growth and potential security challenges, it’s absolutely essential that we provide these services.” This area, dotted with numerous Tesla Cybertrucks and giant SpaceX rockets, occasionally attracts onlookers and disgruntled visitors. Documents show Elon Musk, who registered to vote in Starbase according to data from the Cameron County elections department, resides here. Currently, SpaceX security personnel and off-duty sheriff’s deputies patrol the area, deterring unwelcome visitors. The Border Patrol is also constantly present in this region, located near the Rio Grande River. However, Starbase aims to ensure a constant law enforcement presence here.

In recent weeks, SpaceX has explored advanced security technologies to bolster its protective measures at Starbase, including surveillance drones and AI-powered monitoring systems. Collaborations with local law enforcement are being strengthened to create a comprehensive security network capable of responding swiftly to any incidents. Such measures reflect SpaceX’s commitment to safeguarding the growing community and its critical infrastructure. Additionally, the company faces ongoing challenges amid rapid expansion, from logistical demands to navigating regulatory frameworks, akin to other private aerospace giants.
