SpaceX has reached a level that no other company in the world can currently match. Elon Musk announced that his company now operates over 9,000 active satellites in Earth’s orbit. The entrepreneur wrote about this on the social network X, emphasizing that these are devices currently in working condition. According to Musk, this number is at least twice the total number of satellites launched by all other companies around the world. Profile service data confirms the scale: since 2019, SpaceX has launched over 10,700 devices into orbit, with almost 9,400 remaining active as of December 17.
Rapid Rise: Starlink Doubled Traffic and Users in Just a Year. In comparison, the closest competitors seem modest: British OneWeb launched 656 satellites, while American Planet Labs launched 644. The bulk of SpaceX’s devices consists of the Starlink constellation – a global satellite communications system designed to provide Internet access worldwide through thousands of small satellites weighing up to 500 kg, placed in low Earth orbit.
With Starlink, SpaceX aims to provide internet connectivity to remote and underserved regions. In recent developments, SpaceX has secured deals to collaborate with governments in providing network infrastructure in areas still lacking broadband access. Furthermore, continued innovations are expected for 2025, such as enhanced satellite technology aimed at boosting coverage and service reliability.
Despite the rise of competitors like OneWeb and Planet Labs, SpaceX’s aggressive expansion has allowed it to maintain a dominant position in the satellite market. In the coming year, with further projected launches, SpaceX intends to bolster its leading stance while rivals are expected to innovate in niche segments.
