Smart has launched mass deliveries of its hybrid crossover, the Elf #5 EHD, in China – a key model for the brand in the midsize SUV segment with extended range. Initial buyers in Beijing, Nanjing, Jinan, and Chengdu have already received their vehicles. The starting price is $29,000. The design mirrors the EV version: a wide light strip on the front, four ‘capsules’ in the optical blocks, and a streamlined front shape. Dimensions are 4705 x 1920 x 1710 mm with a wheelbase of 2900 mm.
The interior features a 10.3-inch digital panel, a three-spoke steering wheel, a massive 25.6-inch AR-HUD, and a dual 13-inch 2.5K AMOLED screen in the center. The hybrid platform is built on the Geely Thor 2.0 system: a 1.5-liter turbo engine generates 120 kW, while the electric motor provides 200 kW and 380 Nm. The transmission is a three-speed DHT. Acceleration from 0–100 km/h takes 6.9 seconds (or 7.2 seconds with a smaller battery version). LFP batteries are available in two capacities: 20 kWh (120 km CLTC) and 41.46 kWh (252 km). The maximum combined range reaches 1483-1615 km, with fuel consumption in depleted battery mode of 4.4 l/100 km.
Recent trends in the Chinese automotive market show a growing preference for hybrid vehicles due to environmental regulations and consumer interest in reducing carbon footprints. The Elf #5 EHD aims to capitalize on this trend with its advanced hybrid system and long-range capabilities.
Geely’s Thor 2.0 hybrid system has recently been praised for its efficiency and performance, which significantly enhances the driving experience of the Smart Elf #5 EHD. Additionally, advancements in LFP battery technology continue to improve safety, longevity, and cost-effectiveness, making them a favorable choice for hybrid systems. With ongoing research and development, further enhancements in battery performance can be anticipated, potentially extending the range and efficiency of models like the Elf #5 EHD in the near future.
