Samsung’s ‘Galaxy Wide Fold’ Leaks in One UI 9, Hinting at a Preemptive Strike Against Apple’s Foldable iPhone

It appears Samsung is preparing a completely new foldable smartphone for its Galaxy Fold lineup. A short video clip discovered by Android Authority within the APK files of the One UI 9 beta version demonstrates a seamless application transition from an external to an internal screen. The video clearly shows that the device’s display proportions are much wider than current foldable models, signaling a significant design shift.

A Wider Perspective on Foldables

Unlike the standard Z Fold series with its characteristically tall and narrow body, the new device will feature considerably wider screens. This leak, found within early builds of One UI 9 (based on Android 17), provides the most concrete evidence yet of a new form factor. The device is reportedly being developed under the codename H8 and carries the catalog number SM-F971U. While the official name and release date remain secret, the discovery in One UI 9 suggests a launch in the second half of 2026, likely alongside the Galaxy Z Fold 8 and Z Flip 8.

The Apple Factor: A Preemptive Move

According to preliminary data, Apple’s first foldable smartphone is expected to be introduced with screens of a similar, wider aspect ratio. Many analysts believe this upcoming Samsung model, unofficially dubbed the Galaxy Wide Fold, is a direct response to the rumored foldable iPhone. Apple is widely expected to launch its book-style foldable in the fall of 2026. By launching a device with a similar form factor beforehand, Samsung could strategically position itself to capture market interest and address a key usability critique of its existing Fold series-the cramped outer display.

An Evolving and Competitive Market

Samsung’s potential move isn’t happening in a vacuum. The foldable market is maturing, with a clear consumer preference emerging for book-style foldables over clamshell designs. Competitors like the Google Pixel Fold and OnePlus Open have already adopted wider, more conventional aspect ratios for their outer screens, which many users find more comfortable for everyday tasks. The development of a “Wide Fold” indicates that Samsung is not only reacting to Apple’s future plans but also adapting to the broader market trend and user feedback.

What’s Next for the Galaxy Fold Lineup?

The emergence of the H8 codename and SM-F971U model number, distinct from the expected Galaxy Z Fold 8, strongly suggests this will be an entirely new addition to Samsung’s portfolio rather than a replacement. Leaks indicate Samsung is optimistic about the device’s potential, reportedly planning to ship over one million units after launch. As the second half of 2026 approaches, the tech world will be watching closely to see if this new, wider form factor will redefine the foldable experience and set a new standard in the face of intensifying competition.
