Samsung Left Alone in the 8K TV Arena: A Glimpse into an Uncertain Future

It seems that 8K televisions will not be able to displace 4K models or even capture a significant market share anytime soon. Reportedly, LG has ceased producing such televisions. According to TechRadar, LG, following Sony and TCL, is exiting this segment and will no longer produce 8K OLED televisions for at least a while. The first such model was unveiled by LG back in 2018.

Some models from the Z3 lineup, released last year, will remain on sale for now, but we won’t see any new models.

After 20 years of leadership, could Samsung be dethroned?

TCL has closely approached the Korean giant in the TV market.

Currently, Samsung is the only major player left in the 8K television market, but there’s no certainty it will remain in this segment much longer. 8K TVs are significantly more expensive than 4K models, and the amount of content available for these televisions remains minimal, even though the televisions themselves have been on the market for over a decade.

The Challenges Facing 8K TV Adoption

The primary challenge for 8K televisions is the scarcity of native 8K content. Despite technological advancements and the availability of upscaling features in many TVs, genuine 8K content is not widely produced. Streaming platforms and broadcasters are still largely focused on developing 4K content, leaving 8K in a niche position.

What Happens If Samsung Exits?

If Samsung decides to exit the 8K TV market, it could signal a retreat from ambitions to develop and promote 8K content further. With no substantial content support and a high cost barrier, consumer uptake remains tepid. This could deter other manufacturers from investing in 8K technology, which would further diminish the content available, creating a cycle of limited growth potential in this segment.
