RTX 5080: From Gaming Marvel to AI Powerhouse?

It seems the GeForce RTX 5080 graphics cards will now interest not only gamers. Chinese enthusiasts have learned to create cards with 32 GB of memory, which means that adapters may also be relevant for AI. On Bilibili’s website, they write that a modification involving the doubling of memory volume already exists. Whether such cards have begun to be mass-produced is unclear, but it may be a matter of the near future.

Most likely, as with other similar mods from the Middle Kingdom, it’s about developing a new printed circuit board and resoldering both the GPU and memory chips onto it. The original RTX 5080 has only 16 GB of memory, which is insufficient for AI tasks, whereas 32 GB is more than enough.

Impact on AI and Gaming Industries

The 32 GB memory modification on the RTX 5080 could significantly enhance AI computation capabilities due to increased data handling capacity. Such advances could foster deeper learning models and more complex simulations. For gaming, while most current games do not require such expansive memory, it could pave the way for future titles with highly detailed graphics and more concurrent processes. However, widespread demand for such modifications remains to be seen, given most current applications do not fully utilize the capacity.

Prospects of Mass Production

Mass production feasibility for the 32 GB RTX 5080 modified cards is currently uncertain. Producing new PCBs and manually resoldering components requires significant investment and technical expertise. Unless a substantial market demand justifies the production costs, it may remain a niche product, primarily appealing to tech enthusiasts and professionals in specific sectors, rather than being released at a commercial scale.

Let’s remember, Nvidia itself may later release the RTX 5080 Super with 24 GB of memory, but in this case, just more capacious memory chips will be used, and the mod from Chinese craftsmen implies the same 2-gigabyte chips, just twice as many.
