In Dubai, a ceremonial event marked the completion of major construction for DXV Vertiport, a key component of the world’s first air taxi service network. This vertiport, situated near Dubai International Airport, is to be the central hub of a network developed by Skyports Infrastructure and the Dubai Roads & Transport Authority (RTA). Construction of DXV is 60% complete and proceeding according to schedule, with an opening set for the first quarter of 2026. Upon launch, the vertiport will support flights of Joby Aviation’s S4 electric Vertical Take-Off and Landing (eVTOL) aircraft. Commercial flights are also planned to begin in 2026.
DXV is designed as a high-capacity vertiport, able to handle up to 42,000 takeoffs and landings annually, serving around 170,000 passengers. It is equipped with two platforms and all essential eVTOL infrastructure, including fast-charging stations and safety equipment that meets aviation standards. The vertiport will also accommodate conventional helicopters.
The four-story terminal, covering 3,100 square meters, includes the main passenger terminal and vertiport control center.
eVTOL technology is advancing rapidly, with experts noting recent strides made by companies like Joby Aviation, which recently received certification to operate in the United States, underscoring its leading role in the industry. Public discussions about expanding vertiports for wider urban mobility are increasingly prevalent, with anticipation that the frameworks established by Dubai could serve as a model for other global cities aiming to enhance urban connectivity.
Skyports and RTA are in talks with potential partners to expand their network, preparing to scale operations across urban centers worldwide. This project not only sets a precedent in urban air mobility but also signals a significant shift toward sustainable transportation solutions.
