A YouTube creator, DIY Perks’ Matthew Perks, in collaboration with Etherdyne Technologies, has showcased a breakthrough in wireless power technology capable of powering an entire computer setup. The system, integrated into a 60 × 120 cm desk, features a power circuit delivering up to 100 watts, enough for wirelessly powering a mouse, keyboard, speakers, microphone, and even a monitor.
According to Perks, the Wire-Free Power Zone system operates similarly to wireless chargers for smartphones, which emit electromagnetic fields to transmit power. However, these typically operate at lower frequencies, limiting power output to around 15 watts and requiring devices to be carefully positioned. The new system utilizes a frequency of 6.78 MHz, allowing it to transmit up to 100 watts over a distance of up to one meter, without strict positioning requirements for devices.
To demonstrate the technology’s potential, Perks adapted a variety of devices. He replaced his mouse battery with a wireless receiving coil, created 3D-printed wireless speakers and microphone, and fitted his keyboard with a wireless power adapter. Additionally, he modified a 24-inch monitor stand with two 7-watt power loops, eliminating the need for a power cable while using a wireless HDMI receiver for signal transmission.
Although not currently available for commercial sale, interested users can request a testing kit from Etherdyne’s website. Despite safety concerns over electromagnetic emissions, the developers assure that their technology has passed FCC and CE safety certifications. This innovation is not only set to revolutionize the consumer electronics space but also holds promise for commercial, industrial, and medical applications, setting a potential new benchmark in wireless energy solutions with its impressive 100-watt output.
