Meta’s Reality Labs could achieve a major breakthrough in 2025, according to a recent memo by the company’s CTO, Andrew Bosworth. This year is crucial for the division focused on virtual and augmented reality technologies. Bosworth believes the success or failure of their efforts to revolutionize the metaverse will largely depend on the market response.
There’s budding optimism as Reality Labs sees significant interest in their AI-equipped Ray-Ban Meta glasses. Since October 2023, over 2 million units have been sold, outpacing traditional Ray-Ban models even before the AI enhancements. Major tech players are taking notice—Google has partnered with Gentle Monster and Warby Parker to produce Android XR-powered smart glasses, and Apple is rumored to release a similar device in 2026.
While acknowledging the burgeoning competition, Bosworth underscores that consumer acceptance of VR and AR devices hinges on establishing market standards. He stresses that companies often fail not due to competitors but because they poorly execute their plans. Hence, his focus remains on meeting their internal standards rather than solely reacting to competitors’ moves.
Meta plans to forge ahead with ambitious strategies throughout 2025. By year’s end, Bosworth hopes the company will have met its key objectives, setting the stage for further advancements in the next five years.
The outcomes of this pivotal year could signal either a legendary advance or a misstep in the broader ambition to redefine digital interaction through the metaverse.
