Oura’s Ring of Legal Fire: A Patent Clash with Tech Giants

The company Oura, a pioneer in the smart ring market, has filed a complaint with the U.S. International Trade Commission (ITC) against Samsung, Reebok, Zepp, and Nexxbase. This formidable quartet also manufactures smart rings and is accused by Oura of infringing on its patents.

According to Oura, these patents pertain to the design of the Oura Ring, including its internal and external components, as well as manufacturing processes. “We are committed to thoughtfully and decisively protecting our intellectual property while fostering healthy competition that drives the industry forward,” Oura stated. “We offer a clear development path: royalty-based patent licenses that allow companies to bring compliant products to market, respecting Oura’s intellectual property, and fostering continuous innovation in the smart ring ecosystem. We have settled disputes through licenses with several companies, including Circular, RingConn, and OMATE, allowing them to continue producing products while respecting Oura’s intellectual property. We are open to negotiating similar agreements if necessary.”

As of late 2025, these legal battles have become a critical focal point in the wearable tech industry. The outcome of this case could significantly shift market dynamics and solidify the legal standing of patent protections in wearable technology. Competitors are closely watching these proceedings, anticipating the potential ripple effects on their business strategies. Observers suggest that a ruling in favor of Oura might prompt a broader industry review of patent compliance, potentially leading to a wave of royalty agreements or redesigns across the sector.
