Oshen’s Ocean Robots Defy Hurricanes, Secure Major Contracts

Founded in 2022, Oshen developed a fleet of autonomous micro-robots, C-Stars, designed for ocean data collection. In 2025, these robots successfully gathered data during a Category 5 hurricane. C-Stars can operate autonomously in the ocean for up to 100 days. Before the 2025 hurricane season, the U.S. National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) asked Oshen to deploy robots for data collection. Fifteen C-Stars were sent to the Virgin Islands area, where Hurricane «Humberto» was predicted, with wind speeds exceeding 252 km/h (157 mph). Collecting data inside such hurricanes is crucial for improving forecasting and understanding their dynamics.

Despite expectations that the robots would collect data only before the storm, three robots survived the Category 5 hurricane and continued transmitting information. This marks the first time an ocean robot collected data inside a hurricane of this magnitude. The success caught the attention of both government and defense organizations, leading to contracts with the UK government. Oshen plans to attract venture capital to expand production and meet growing demand. Currently, the company is based in Plymouth, England, at the center of marine technology.

Recent updates in marine autonomous technologies suggest a shift towards more resilient equipment capable of operating under extreme conditions, such as hurricanes. Oshen’s advancements underscore the importance of integrating real-time data collection with strategic forecasting.

Growing Interest in Maritime Data Solutions

The booming interest in maritime data solutions reflects the global shift towards technology-driven insights in understanding oceanic phenomena. Oshen is playing a critical role in enhancing predictive capabilities, heralding a new era of informed decision-making in weather forecasting.
