It seems that OpenAI’s plans to enter the consumer device market have shifted. The company, as a reminder, is working on AI headphones, but it is now reported that this project has been postponed. Insider Smart Pikachu suggests that OpenAI headphones will still be launched this year, but they will essentially be just headphones. The project involving artificial intelligence and the most advanced Samsung chip has been postponed indefinitely due to issues with market prices.
This project was scheduled for release in the second half of the year. The simpler headphones could be released either around the same time frame or earlier, as the product itself will be less complex. In fact, these will be just headphones, although they will, of course, support ChatGPT, but without complex electronics inside and without local AI.
As of early 2026, Samsung continues to lead in semiconductor technology with their Exynos chips, yet they face pricing pressures due to market conditions. This has impacted plans that rely heavily on high-end chipset integration.
Meanwhile, the competition in the headphone market is fierce with brands like Sony and Bose leading in noise-cancelling technology. OpenAI’s simplified model could fill a niche for consumers preferring direct AI integration over premium audio quality.
It remains unclear what such a device will offer compared to competitors. The insider also reports that OpenAI has registered the trademark ‘Dime’ for the headphones.
