OLED Upgrade: PlayStation Portal Seeks a Brighter Future

The portable gaming console PlayStation Portal may soon receive an upgraded version with a higher-quality screen. According to renowned insider Kepler_L2, the new version will feature an OLED display. The current console, it should be remembered, comes with an eight-inch IPS screen offering Full HD resolution and a frame rate of 60 Hz. The upcoming model is unlikely to differ in these latter parameters but will instead benefit from the enhanced OLED panel. However, it’s probable that such a version will be more expensive.

It remains unknown whether there will be other changes, but Sony could potentially work on battery life improvements, upgrade the Wi-Fi version, and more.

A Look at the Current PlayStation Portal Capabilities

Initially, the PS Portal was quite a unique device, only capable of streaming games from the home PS5. However, last year, Sony released an update, allowing the console to run games from the PS Plus cloud service independently of the primary console. Currently, this service does not function in all countries and requires a paid subscription. Nonetheless, the PS Portal itself costs just $200, a fraction of the price of any other portable console capable of playing contemporary games, while also offering all the advantages of the DualSense gamepad.

Insider Kepler has frequently shared detailed information about the specifications of future AMD CPU and GPU, particularly platforms for gaming consoles. He also previously revealed features of the PS5 Slim. With the potential introduction of an OLED display, the PlayStation Portal could see increased consumer interest, boost competitive edge, and respond to current market demands for superior visual quality.

Potential Future Innovations

Looking forward, Sony might consider adding features that align with modern gaming trends. Integration with emerging gaming technologies, offering enhanced cloud gaming capabilities, and increasing the app ecosystem could make the PlayStation Portal even more appealing. Improved connectivity options and longer battery life would further resonate well with consumers seeking portability and convenience in their gaming experience.
