It seems that at least Intel’s 18A process won’t be the foundation for chips developed by Nvidia. Reports indicate that the company tested it and dismissed the idea of using it. Reuters does not provide details, but states that testing indeed took place, and apparently the results did not meet Nvidia’s expectations.
While Intel is gaining momentum in deal-making, its production division faces challenges in releasing high-quality in-house manufactured chips. According to two sources familiar with the situation, Nvidia recently experimented with manufacturing its chips using Intel’s production process known as 18A but has abandoned this idea.
It’s important to recall the companies previously struck a $5 billion deal and announced joint development, and it should be understood that Nvidia’s current refusal to produce its chips on Intel’s 18A capacities does not affect the deal: Nvidia was not obligated to use these norms.
Moreover, it has been previously reported that many companies, including Nvidia, have long been actively interested in the 14A process, as Intel’s clients participate in the process from the very early stages.
