Nissan Revives the Xterra: Classic Style Meets Modern Tech

Nissan is officially preparing to bring back one of its most recognizable and iconic SUVs, the Xterra, which was discontinued in 2015. Interest in the model is rapidly increasing, and the company is already revealing early details about the upcoming new product. In particular, it is reported that the SUV will still be affordable.

In an interview with The Drive at the Los Angeles Auto Show, Nissan’s Senior Vice President Michael Soutter stated that the new Xterra “should start at less than $40,000.” This automatically brings the model into direct price competition with the Ford Bronco, Jeep Wrangler, and the updated Toyota 4Runner, which have long occupied the niche of affordable frame SUVs. For comparison, the Toyota Land Cruiser in the USA starts at $58,000. The Xterra will be a direct competitor to the Toyota model, as in the USA, under the name Land Cruiser, it is not the Land Cruiser 300 that is presented, but the one tier below, the Land Cruiser Prado 250.

For Xterra fans, another aspect is equally important – the legendary color. Soutter emphasized that the SUV “absolutely must be yellow.”

The technical base will also not disappoint fans. Nissan has confirmed that the Xterra will feature a real frame structure and will share the platform with the Frontier pickup. The novelty will be produced at Nissan’s plant in Canton, Mississippi.

It is expected that under the hood will be a modernized version of the 3.8-liter V6 from the Frontier, with 310 horsepower and 381 Nm of torque. The appearance of a hybrid version is not excluded. Soutter also confirmed the presence of a two-stage transfer case with a lower range and promised that the Xterra would be “simple, fun, and capable.”

The exact premiere date is not yet determined. It is expected that the new Xterra will be shown in 2027, and sales will start in 2028.
