Mercedes-Benz is actively testing the next-generation successor to its popular GLA compact SUV, poised to go head-to-head with rivals like the BMW iX1. Spy shots reveal a vehicle that maintains the GLA’s recognizable crossover silhouette but is built upon a completely new, electric-first architecture. This upcoming model will be based on the advanced Mercedes-Benz Modular Architecture (MMA), a versatile platform designed to support both all-electric and hybrid powertrains, signaling a major strategic shift for the brand’s entry-level luxury segment.
The new compact SUV will feature a sleek, coupe-like profile with short overhangs and a gently sloping roofline. Drawing inspiration from the latest CLA concepts, the design includes flush-fitting door handles and distinctive lighting. At the rear, a full-width LED light bar and star-shaped tail lights create a modern and unmistakable signature.
Inside, the cabin will undergo a significant digital transformation, adopting the MBUX Superscreen first seen in models like the new E-Class. This system integrates a digital instrument cluster, a large central infotainment touchscreen, and an optional screen for the front passenger under a single pane of glass. Powered by the new MB.OS software architecture, the system will offer enhanced personalization through artificial intelligence, learning the driver’s habits to automate functions like climate control. Passengers can expect more interior space and a larger cargo area, enhancing the vehicle’s practicality. Advanced driver-assistance will be provided by the MB.Drive system, enabling semi-autonomous driving and automated parking features.
The MMA platform is engineered as an “electric-first” architecture, featuring an advanced 800-volt system that enables exceptionally fast DC charging speeds of up to 320 kW. The all-electric version is expected to be offered in two main configurations: a rear-wheel-drive model producing around 268 horsepower (200 kW) and a dual-motor, all-wheel-drive variant with approximately 349 horsepower (260 kW). An 85 kWh battery is anticipated to provide a driving range between 337 and 392 miles (542–631 km) on the WLTP cycle.
For those not ready to go fully electric, a mild-hybrid version will be available. It will feature a 1.5-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine paired with a 48-volt system, with power outputs ranging from 136 to 190 horsepower. Looking further ahead, high-performance AMG models are planned, including a potent all-electric AMG version expected to deliver over 500 horsepower.
The primary target for the new electric GLA/EQA successor is the BMW iX1. The iX1 xDrive30 offers 313 hp and a WLTP range of up to 272 miles (438 km) from its 64.8 kWh battery. Mercedes appears to be aiming for a competitive edge with a larger battery, longer range, and significantly faster charging capabilities. Other key competitors in this growing segment include the Audi Q4 e-tron, which offers a range of up to 344 miles (554 km) in certain configurations, and the ever-popular Tesla Model Y.
This new model is a cornerstone of Mercedes-Benz’s strategy to transition its compact car family-which will be streamlined from seven models to four-towards an electric future. The electric version of the compact SUV is expected to debut later in 2026, with the hybrid and high-performance AMG variants scheduled for release in 2027. This launch is part of a massive product offensive from the German automaker, which plans to introduce over 15 new or refreshed models in 2026 alone.
