Mitsubishi is preparing to revive the legendary Pajero SUV (known as Montero in the U.S.). In an official YouTube video, the silhouette of a new square-shaped model was briefly shown, matching the prototype previously spotted by spy photographers.
The SUV features an angular body similar to the Elevance concept unveiled in October. It is expected that the new Pajero will be technically unified with the upcoming Nissan Xterra (based on the Frontier pickup platform). Under the hood, there will be a 3.8-liter V6 producing 310 hp or a hybrid powertrain.
Mitsubishi plans to release one new model every year starting in 2026. The new SUV aims to be a brand flagship that rekindles enthusiasts’ interest.
For those who remember the robust appeal of the original Pajero, this new iteration promises both a trip down memory lane and a leap into the future with modern technology. The decision to release models annually also suggests a strategic effort by Mitsubishi to regain its footing in the competitive SUV market. This could mean not only a focus on nostalgic models but also an infusion of cutting-edge design and technology to appeal to a new generation of drivers.
The industry response has been positive, with anticipation building around the Pajero’s return. This move marks Mitsubishi’s renewed commitment to broadening their SUV lineup, possibly leading to increased competition among off-road giants. Nissan’s partnership plays a crucial role too, as shared technology between the Pajero and Xterra may streamline development and manufacturing processes.
