At the Tokyo Motor Show, which kicked off on January 9, Mitsubishi Motors President Takao Kato announced the company’s plan to release a full-sized SUV in 2026. Although the vehicle was not directly showcased, the final frames of the official video reveal a large automobile, which, according to the BestCarWeb, is highly likely to be the new Mitsubishi Pajero.
The model marks the legendary flagship SUV’s comeback after seven years, following its departure from the Japanese market in 2019. Previously, there were rumors the new Pajero would mirror the Nissan Patrol, but Japanese media confirm it’s a unique Mitsubishi development, crucial for brand enthusiasts. It’s expected to be built on the Mitsubishi Triton’s platform but will feature a larger body, roughly 5 meters long (about 16 feet), which is about 10 cm longer than the Pajero IV.
Initially, the model will come with a 2.4-liter turbodiesel (similar to the Mitsubishi Triton), but the platform was originally designed for plug-in hybrid systems and, eventually, full electrification. The hybrid version is likely to become the top-tier model later. Best Car Web predicts the new Pajero’s starting price at about 5 million yen ($32,000).
Mitsubishi’s move aligns with rising SUV trends emphasizing hybrid and electric models, enhanced tech features, and off-road prowess, giving it a competitive edge.
