Microsoft has unveiled its new lineup of “ugly” sweaters for the holiday season. Known for releasing themed sweaters almost every year-despite skipping 2024-the tech giant introduces three distinct designs this year.
The collection includes the black-and-green Xbox Holiday Sweater, the brown Zune Holiday Sweater celebrating the long-defunct Zune service, and the most traditionally ‘ugly’ option, the Artifact Sweater, which boasts a variety of icons and the iconic virtual assistant, Clippy.
The Artifact and Zune sweaters are priced at $80, while the Xbox sweater is available for pre-order at $60.
Microsoft’s continued foray into festive apparel seems driven by a blend of nostalgia and community. These sweaters have captured the affection of tech enthusiasts and nostalgic fans, with the Zune sweater, in particular, sparking memories of the discontinued digital media player. Microsoft has not publicly commented on the reasoning behind the absence of the 2024 edition, leaving followers intrigued by the gap in their annual tradition.
Microsoft representatives have emphasized that these sweaters are more than just festive apparel; they aim to create a sense of community among its fanbase. Although there’s no confirmation of proceeds going to charity this year, past sweater collections have sometimes supported charitable causes.
The consistent popularity of these sweaters underlines their success as a marketing tool, subtly enhancing Microsoft’s brand awareness in a playful, consumer-friendly manner. Over the years, these items have managed to become collector favorites, further embedding Microsoft in seasonal traditions beyond technology.
