It appears that portable gaming consoles are on the verge of leveraging Neural Processing Units (NPUs) for genuinely useful features, marking a significant step in on-the-go gaming. Microsoft is currently testing a pioneering function called Highlight Reels for the upcoming Asus ROG Xbox Ally X. This feature is designed to automatically create video clips of memorable gaming moments without imposing any extra load on the system’s main processors, a critical innovation for power-constrained handheld devices.
The Highlight Reels feature allows players to automatically capture key moments in their games without needing to download additional software or even exit the game. Its official launch is anticipated in the coming months, debuting on the portable Xbox Ally X. The core of this technology lies in its use of the NPU’s power. By offloading the complex task of identifying and recording highlights to this specialized AI hardware, the main APU (CPU and GPU) is freed up to focus solely on running the game, ensuring that performance and frame rates remain unaffected. This is a crucial advantage, as the APUs in portable consoles have no performance to spare.
The upcoming Xbox Ally X is expected to be built on the powerful AMD Ryzen AI Z2 Extreme processor. This next-generation chip features an integrated XDNA 2 neural engine capable of delivering up to 50 TOPS (Trillion Operations Per Second). This level of AI performance is a substantial leap, enabling sophisticated, real-time analysis of gameplay to identify highlight-worthy events. While many other APUs in portable consoles also have neural blocks, they are often significantly less powerful. The Ryzen AI Z2 Extreme’s NPU not only enables features like Highlight Reels but also opens the door for other AI-driven enhancements such as Automatic Super Resolution (Auto SR), which uses AI to upscale games for better visual quality.
Microsoft is currently testing the Highlight Reels feature across a wide array of popular games, including Forza Horizon 5, Palworld, League of Legends, DOTA 2, Rocket League, Elden Ring, Overwatch 2, Lies of P, Battlefield 6, Call of Duty, Among Us, Fortnite, and Rainbow Six Siege. This extensive testing suggests that the ultimate goal is to integrate the functionality across all games on the platform.
