Microsoft Faces Another Patchy Situation with Windows Update

On January 13, 2026, Microsoft released the first security update for Windows in 2026. However, only a few days later, the company was compelled to issue an emergency unscheduled update to address some significant errors that had been uncovered.

Specifically, the January “security patch” led to shutdown and remote access issues on some devices. Users complained that the update caused failures when trying to shut down or enter hibernation mode on devices with the Secure Launch feature. Furthermore, some users experienced difficulties in connection and authentication within remote access applications. Microsoft responded quite promptly by releasing an out-of-band update that rectified these issues. The company also clarified that the shutdown problems affected only devices running Windows 11 version 23H2. Glitches with remote access arose across various platforms, including Windows 11 25H2, Windows 10 22H2 ESU, and Windows Server 2025.

Following the timely patch, Microsoft emphasized its commitment to resolving such issues swiftly, reflecting on past challenges with major updates. This approach has often been met with mixed reactions from the tech community, with some experts highlighting the need for more robust pre-release testing processes. Regular users and developers alike have expressed concerns on social media, lamenting the recurring nature of such update troubles while hoping for lasting solutions. The tech giant continues to monitor feedback closely, promising to enhance their testing and security mechanisms to prevent future occurrences.
