Micron’s Memory Predicament: A Crisis of Capacity and Opportunity

Micron Company publicly commented on the memory market situation for the first time after announcing the closure of its old Crucial brand. The company confirmed that the memory chip shortage will persist even after 2026. During an investor conference, Micron expressed disappointment in its inability to meet demand and admitted it will continue to face challenges in the coming years, despite expanding manufacturing capabilities.

The expansion has already begun. The company is constructing two factories in Idaho, with the first expected to start producing chips in mid-2027. However, even with the expansion, Micron anticipates being able to meet only half to two-thirds of the demand from its key customers in the coming years.

Additionally, Micron disclosed an intriguing detail that industry insiders are aware of, but ordinary consumers likely are not. The current memory market catastrophe initially stemmed from the fact that Micron, Hynix, and Samsung reduced regular DRAM production in favor of producing much more lucrative HBM memory due to demand from the AI market. As it turns out, HBM memory chips take up three times more space on a semiconductor wafer, which noticeably exacerbates the problem.

Micron forecasts that by 2028, the HBM market alone will reach $100 billion, surpassing the entire DRAM market in 2024. Incidentally, the company has reported over a 1.5 times increase in revenue ($13.64 billion) over the previous financial quarter compared to last year.

In recent developments, Micron is actively seeking solutions to overcome these challenges. The company is exploring partnerships with leading tech firms and government initiatives aimed at bolstering domestic production and technological capabilities. These collaborations may involve joint ventures, research into new materials, or utilizing advanced AI-driven manufacturing processes to boost efficiency. As the industry pivots towards HBM due to its higher profitability and application in AI technologies, big players are also focusing on innovation to alleviate production constraints and meet futuristic demands.
