Meta has signed several contracts for the supply of electricity from nuclear power plants, making the company the largest purchaser of nuclear energy among technology firms working with AI. According to Bloomberg, the total power under these agreements will exceed 6 gigawatts.
Currently, Meta is building the Prometheus gigawatt data center in Ohio, which is scheduled to launch this year. The more extensive Hyperion facility, with a capacity of 5 GW in Louisiana, is set to commence operations by 2028. Altogether, this means that the company will need at least 6 GW of stable energy infrastructure.
The electricity purchased by Meta will come from three suppliers. The key partner is Vistra Corp., which will supply the company with energy from operating nuclear power plants. This includes 2,176 MW from the Perry and Davis-Besse plants in Ohio, as well as an additional increase of 433 MW from these same plants and the Beaver Valley nuclear plant in Pennsylvania.
Additionally, Meta has signed agreements with two startups – Oklo, Inc., supported by OpenAI, and TerraPower LLC, backed by Bill Gates and Nvidia. However, both projects are still in development phases for small modular reactors, with real implementation expected no earlier than the 2030s.
Commenting on the deals, Meta’s head of global energy, Urvi Parekh, stated: «At Meta, we are investing in nuclear energy because it provides clean and reliable energy essential for advancing our AI ambitions and bolstering U.S. leadership in energy innovation. By supporting nuclear power, we ensure that our operations – and the communities we serve – receive solutions that foster both technological progress and economic growth.»
