Mercedes-Benz Charges Ahead: Electric GLC with Vegan Interiors Sparks Innovation

Mercedes-Benz has unveiled the electric version of its popular GLC crossover featuring an optional “vegan” interior at a recent exhibition. This marks the first time the automaker is offering such an option. Interiors included in the Vegan Package contain no animal-derived materials and have not been tested on animals. This has been confirmed by the Vegan Society following a rigorous audit of Mercedes-Benz’s supply chain that lasted over two years. The Vegan Society verified over 100 components from various suppliers for animal-derived materials and animal testing. During the audit, soft materials such as faux leather, textiles, carpets, and headliner were tested. Components containing animal elements were re-engineered using alternatives. The risks of contamination with animal-derived ingredients were also assessed and minimized. Furthermore, a large quantity of recycled materials is used in the interiors of the new model.

The electric Mercedes-Benz GLC is equipped with a 483 horsepower engine and has a limited top speed of 210 km/h (130 mph). Its 94 kWh battery offers a range of up to 713 km (443 miles). The vehicle supports fast direct current charging at 330 kW, allowing about 300 km (186 miles) of range to be added in 10 minutes. The GLC features an 800-volt charging system. The car operates on the MB.OS platform with artificial intelligence and comes with the fourth-generation MBUX infotainment system, integrating AI from Microsoft and Google. Users can also opt for the 39.1-inch MBUX Hyperscreen-the largest screen in Mercedes-Benz vehicles. The GLC is equipped with an SAE Level 2 driver assistance system with navigation support, enabling the car to drive itself from parking to destination (Level 2 implies partial driving automation where the driver must be ready to take control at any moment). Mercedes-Benz GLC is expected to go on sale in the second quarter of 2026. The “vegan” interior can be selected in the online configurator.

This innovation reflects a broader industry shift towards sustainable and ethical practices. Other manufacturers have also announced initiatives to eliminate animal products from their vehicle interiors, echoing consumer interest in more ethical options.
