Memory Crisis: AI’s Insatiable Appetite and Its Domino Effect

The ongoing crisis in the memory chip market is due to the massive demand for HBM memory from AI data centers. Analysts indicate that up to 70% of all memory this year will go to data centers, which will affect not just consumer electronics like computers and smartphones, but also the automotive industry, televisions, and home electronics. During the COVID-19 pandemic, the automotive industry also suffered due to chip shortages, with factories idling for weeks or months.

Memory manufacturers are now pre-selling quotas for 2028.
