Mazda2’s Latest Facelift: Subcompact Star Drives On

One of the longest-serving players in the subcompact segment, the Mazda2, has received another update for the Japanese market. This move dispels rumors that production of this model would cease.

The third generation of the Mazda2 first appeared in July 2014. Since then, the model has gone through two major facelifts in 2019 and 2023. Now, it receives another makeover. In the new model year, the Mazda2 gets targeted enhancements in standard equipment. The base version, 15C II, now comes with a Utility Package, which includes a 60/40 split-folding rear seatback and tinted rear windows. The 15 BD i Selection II adds a Mazda Connect package with an 8.8-inch multimedia system, a 360° Safety Package (including a surround view monitor, front parking sensors, and an auto-dimming mirror), and a digital TV tuner; the 15 Sport II now includes heated seats and a heated steering wheel as standard.

The mechanical side remains unchanged: under the hood remains the previous naturally aspirated 1.5-liter Skyactiv-G engine available in two power outputs – 109 hp and 114 hp. The car features either front-wheel or all-wheel drive, with six-speed manual or automatic transmission options depending on the configuration. Pre-orders for the 2026 Mazda2 model are already open in Japan, with sales beginning in early December. Prices range from $11,000 for the base front-wheel-drive 15C II version to $16,000 for the top-of-the-line all-wheel-drive 15 Sport+.

Earlier this year, Mazda halted sales of the Mazda2 in the United Kingdom. However, the Mazda2 Hybrid – essentially a rebadged version of the 2021 Toyota Yaris Hybrid – remains available in Europe and the UK, ensuring the Mazda2 name lives on in these markets.
