LG Smart TVs Surprise Users with Indelible Chatbot Update

LG’s smart TVs, operating on the webOS platform, have unexpectedly started receiving updates that among other things, install Microsoft’s Copilot chatbot on the devices. Users noticed that a tile featuring Copilot appeared in the app list without their installation. Moreover, while they can hide it, the application cannot be removed.

This update likely results from a deal between Microsoft and LG. Earlier this year, both LG and Samsung announced intentions to incorporate Copilot into their televisions, although they did not warn that the chatbot would be unremovable. Additionally, the menu has revealed a Live Plus setting. This feature tracks content consumed by users to form personalized services, including advertisements. Fortunately, this can be turned off.

Recent developments suggest a strategic partnership between LG and Microsoft to seamlessly integrate advanced AI capabilities into their smart TVs. However, this move raises significant privacy concerns, as the presence of a non-removable application could be seen as a breach of user autonomy over their devices. Experts in the field emphasize the need for transparent notices and options for consumers regarding data-sharing practices.

Notably, LG’s collaboration with other tech giants like Samsung strives to push the boundaries of smart TV functionality. Yet, the inclusion of features that cannot be uninstalled without user consent could potentially backfire, leading to user dissatisfaction and scrutiny from privacy advocates.
