KG Mobility Challenges the Pickup Kings with Electrification

Introduction to the New Era of Pickup Trucks

Mid-size pickups are incredibly popular in various countries, with automakers lining up to challenge market bestsellers. Following Kia with its new Tasman pickup, South Korean company KG Mobility (formerly known as SsangYong) is entering the fray. KG Mobility plans to separate the Musso name into a family, including electric, hybrid, and traditional fuel pickups.

KGM has unveiled the appearance of the Q300-the upcoming utility pickup. Under the codename Q300, it aims to replace the Rexton Sports model (known internationally as the Musso).

The design of the new model is striking, yet references can be seen to the Ford F-150 (in the headlights) and to Jeep (the grille). A robust skid plate and large air intakes emphasize the off-road nature of the model.

Variety of Models and Design Influences

KGM will offer two versions of the pickup: the standard one and an off-road Grand Style Package. In profile, the legacy of the Rexton Sports is noticeable: the glazing, pillars, and railings remain the same, although most body panels are new. At the rear are vertical LED lights, massive plastic protection, and a bumper with integrated steps.

The interior hasn’t been revealed yet, but it’s expected to feature a modern “digital cockpit.” The KGM Q300 will retain the frame structure of the Rexton but will receive structural updates. Besides the familiar gasoline and diesel engines, a hybrid power unit will be included for the first time.

Market Impact and Future Developments

The full premiere of the car is scheduled for January 2026. Initially, the pickup will launch in its home market of South Korea, followed by Europe, the UK, and Australia. It will face competition from the Toyota Hilux, Ford Ranger, Mitsubishi L200, Volkswagen Amarok, and Kia Tasman. The push towards electrification places KG Mobility in direct competition within the growing electric and hybrid market, as advances such as faster charging times and increased battery efficiency become priorities. Analysts predict a significant shift in the pickup market by 2026, driven by consumer demand for greener vehicles.
