At the beginning of the month, news surfaced that Intel embarked on a “hunt” for a former senior vice president of TSMC to boost its semiconductor division. Ultimately, the company succeeded in acquiring Wei Zhen Luo, but along with him came a lawsuit from TSMC. TSMC did not sue Intel, but directly their former specialist, who is now an Intel employee.
TSMC is concerned that their former employee may pass a significant amount of valuable information to Intel. Luo had access to confidential data related to the 2nm process technology, which is currently the most advanced and relevant for the next few years. Reports indicate that TSMC was seemingly not notified of Luo’s move to Intel, even though this information was widespread online. The company allegedly informed that the former leader joined Intel exclusively for academic purposes.
Recently, Intel announced its ambitious roadmap for the next five years, focusing heavily on advancing its semiconductor capabilities. This move is seen as a part of a broader strategy to regain and solidify its market leader position against TSMC and Samsung. Furthermore, TSMC has revealed continued advancements in the 2nm process, emphasizing enhanced power efficiency and higher transistor density, which could revolutionize industry standards if successfully implemented by 2027.
