Intel’s Modest Leap: Xeon Granite Rapids Tussles with Ryzen Giant

As previously reported, Intel is gearing up to release its Xeon 600 Granite Rapids-WS processors for workstations, set to compete with AMD’s Ryzen Threadripper. A glimpse of its capabilities was seen in a recent benchmark. Photo by WCCF Tech

The Xeon 654 model will fall within the lower half of the lineup, offering only 18 cores. For the HEDT segment today, this is relatively scarce, although there are smaller models too. This CPU is known to operate at speeds up to 4.8 GHz and will feature 72 MB of L3 cache, which is modest for this class, yet it is one of the entry-level models.

Performance in Geekbench is as follows: 2634 in single-thread and 14,743 in multi-thread modes, respectively. Speaking of the latter, it approximately matches the performance level of an Apple M4, which seems quite modest for HEDT, but we don’t yet know how far these results are from what a production model might show.

Currently, AMD’s Ryzen Threadripper is recognized for its higher core counts and exceptional multi-threaded performance. This gives it an edge in tasks demanding extensive parallel processing, which remains a key battleground for Intel’s upcoming offerings in the Xeon line.
