Renowned insider and analyst at TF International Securities, Ming-Chi Kuo, reports that Intel is expected to manufacture the most budget-friendly chip in Apple’s M series by 2027. What this chip will be remains speculative. It could possibly be the hypothetical M6/M7, or a new chip specifically designed by Apple for a budget MacBook. Notably, the first model of such a notebook is rumored to feature the SoC A18 Pro. The chip will be produced using the 18A-P process, with shipments anticipated in the second or third quarter of 2027.

The analyst states that Apple has already signed a non-disclosure agreement with Intel and gained access to the advanced 18A-P process (PDK 0.9.1GA). Kuo highlights that the supply of a standard MacBook Air in 2026 might be influenced by this more affordable MacBook model. It is expected that the shipment volumes of the junior version of the Apple M SoC will reach 15-20 million units in 2026 and 2027.

Kuo is known for his insights on Apple, having previously revealed details about the 15-inch MacBook Air, Vision Pro headset, and many other innovations before their official announcements.

Implications of the Intel and Apple Collaboration

This potential collaboration signifies a shift in Apple’s supply chain strategy, potentially reducing its dependency on TSMC. The semiconductor landscape is constantly evolving; as Intel seeks to compete more directly with established players like TSMC, their advancements in the 18A process could become a strategic advantage.

The semiconductor industry is witnessing rapid advancements in chip manufacturing technology, with Intel’s 18A process aiming to provide improved performance and power efficiency. These developments are crucial as Apple continues to enhance its MacBook lineup, appealing to consumers seeking high-performance technology at budget-friendly prices.
